A suspicious teachers’ meeting linked to the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has triggered serious warnings from both the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU).
The meeting, planned for July 19, 2025, at St. Kizito Primary School in Lira City, is being flagged as a likely scam aimed at extorting money from unsuspecting educators.
Advertised as a workshop to improve teaching practices, the event demands UGX 25,000 from teachers and UGX 30,000 from administrators, raising alarm among education authorities.
“We are not aware of any such training,” a UNEB official warned. “These individuals are impersonating UNEB staff to extort money from teachers. Don’t fall for it.”
An insider source within the UPC party revealed that the real purpose of the event is political mobilization under the guise of professional development.
“Jimmy Akena is using Topista Akello and the Uganda Humanities Teachers Association to organize these meetings, not for training, but to collect funds and gather political support for UPC,” the source stated.
Another UNEB staff member added: “If this were a legitimate educational event, the cost would be transparent and not this high. This smells like a money-making scheme.”
UNEB is urging teachers to be cautious and verify any workshops with their local education offices.
In response, UNATU also issued a statement urging teachers to avoid the event.
“Our members should not be exploited for political or personal gain,” UNATU noted. “Teachers must protect their finances.”
Teachers across the Lango sub-region have been asked to be cautious about parting with their money.
Concerns have been raised that the event may be part of a broader trend of political actors disguising fundraising schemes as professional development, especially as Uganda nears the 2026 general elections.
