More than 30 disabled persons from different parts of Lango sub-region have started walking after benefiting from the Limb Replacement Project by Indian Women Association (IWA) along with Indian High Commission in Uganda.
The 30 beneficiaries were part of 100 disabled Ugandans who received artificial limb machines from Mulago National Hospital on Saturday last week.
More beneficiaries are being registered for the same project in the country.
Mr Francis Ayoo, the Orum sub-county chief in Otuke district who’s one of the beneficiaries, appreciated the efforts made by the Ministry of Health through Dr Jane Ruth Aceng (Health Minister) who lobbied for the support.
Had it not been for this support, each disabled person interested in getting artificial limb would pay between shs3, 000,000 to shs5, 000,000, respectively.
Christine Awino, 25, a resident of Lira City East who lost her left leg in a car accident in 2019, is also able to walk using the artificial limb given to her last week.
She testified that she is able to move and stand upright compared to when there was no machine supporting her.
Amsa Oteng who is currently working with Lira district local government’s Persons with Disability (PWDs) office confirmed the development on Monday to TND News.
He said the beneficiaries are being taken in shift to Mulago Hospital where the 17 beneficiaries have got the medical assistance two weeks ago, while 21 beneficiaries were given on Saturday 19, December 2020 after taking their measurements depending on level of disability.
