President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni made a significant contribution to the new All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero, Kampala, donating UGX 100 million and pledging an additional UGX 1 billion for the completion of the exterior ¹.
During the grand opening of the cathedral on November 1, 2024, Museveni emphasized the importance of unity among people of different faiths, urging them to fight against sectarianism and work together ¹.
The cathedral’s construction project, which began in 2010, aimed to expand its capacity from 400 to 5000 seats, making it one of the largest in Uganda ¹ ².
Museveni shared a personal anecdote, saying, “I discussed with Mama when we saw the good thing here and said for us, What have we done? Then we agreed that from our cows, not from the government budget, we contribute 100 million shillings, but since you also elected me as the president, I will use that authority that you gave me in the new budget of July to contribute 1 billion shillings.”
He stressed the need to judge people by their actions, not denominations, highlighting his administration’s rejection of sectarianism ¹.
Museveni commended the interreligious council, saying, “When we started our work, we rejected completely sectarianism; that is how we were able to build this force, which has been there for some time now.”
The event, attended by over 3000 people, also saw the consecration of Ven. Rev. Canon Fredrick Jackson Baalwa as the new Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, and the ordination of other clergy and installation of new Canons ¹.
Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among contributed UGX 50 million towards the event’s organization on October 30, 2024 ¹.
The cathedral’s construction has cost over UGX 18 billion, with an additional UGX 6 billion needed to complete exterior works.
