UMSC Initiates Nationwide Muslim Census Amid Dispute Over Population Figures

His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, has announced plans to conduct a nationwide Muslim census.
This decision was made to address the discrepancy in the recently released census report, which showed a significant decline in the Muslim population.
According to the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics, the Muslim population stands at 6.05 million, a figure disputed by Muslims nationwide.
Mufti Mubaje questioned the accuracy of this figure, citing the high birth rate in Muslim polygamous families.
He suggested that this underreporting may be a deliberate attempt to deny Muslims access to national resources by portraying them as a minority.
The Mufti maintained that the Muslim population has doubled to nearly 12 million, based on UMSC’s own projections.
During his speech, Sheikh Mubaje expressed gratitude to the Mbarara Muslim leadership for promoting Islamic values of brotherhood and unity.
He praised the Muslim youth for renovating the mosque and constructing a business center to fund Islamic activities.
The Mufti cautioned the youth against spreading hate speech and insults towards national leaders on social media.
UMSC is launching the Self-Sustainability Agribusiness Project to boost Muslim household incomes, focusing on coffee growing in the Ankole-Kigezi Muslim Region.
Sheikh Mubaje pledged financial support for the business center’s construction and declared the completion of the Abubakar Mosque renovation.
The event featured updates on community development and spiritual growth from UMSC officials and a sermon on brotherhood by Sheikh Dr. Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga.
The Mufti was accompanied by UMSC National Management members, who toured the business center construction site.
