UPDF Air Force Takes a Leap Forward with First-Ever Fuel Station

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Air Force has commissioned its first dedicated fuel station, marking a milestone in the force’s efforts to strengthen internal fuel supply systems and reduce operational costs.

The strategic facility, located at the Air Force Headquarters in Entebbe, was officially launched on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, by the Commander of the UPDF Air Force, Lt Gen Charles Okidi, who described the development as “a remarkable achievement.”

“It is a pleasure and honour to witness and commission the first-ever fuel station for the Air Force,” said Lt Gen Okidi.

“This will reduce reliance on external suppliers and increase our logistical independence,” Lt Gen Okidi added.

Lt Gen Okidi emphasized the need for the station’s managers to maintain strict operational standards and called for the installation of a fuel servicing machine to eliminate expensive outsourcing and support sustained air operations.

The fuel station commissioning follows a presidential directive requiring all UPDF units to establish their own in-house fueling systems.

Brig Gen David Gonyi, Chief of Staff – Air Force, said the project aligns with this national objective of reducing costs and enhancing the military’s efficiency and image.

“Previously, fueling from civilian outlets not only cost us more but also affected the discipline and public perception of our military transport operations,” said Brig Gen Gonyi.

He noted that the Air Force fuel station will now serve all Air Force vehicles and aircraft stationed in Entebbe and surrounding units, with full control over storage, distribution, and safety protocols.

More fuel stations across the country are being developed, with Col Justus Nsereko, Director of Engineering, revealing that 12 other fuel stations have already been completed and certified across UPDF units nationwide, with more under construction.

The project falls under broader efforts by the UPDF to enhance internal logistics systems, including aircraft maintenance, transport coordination, and field operations resupply.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior military officials, including Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, Chief of Joint Staff and Chairman of the Supervisory Committee, Maj Gen Don Nabasa, Joint Staff – Policy and Strategy, and Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Joint Staff – Logistics.
